About Our Cottage

This cottage has been in our family for more than 45 years. The cottage was built in the early 1900's and is purported to be the most historic dwelling on beautiful Lake George. We have been told it was originally a hunting cabin for the family that owned the surrounding farmland, it was sold as a cottage after the dam, controlling the lake level, was built in the 1920's. A subsequent owner and archeologist collected stones on each of his many voyages and built the fireplace with them. He then fitted it with a walnut mantle, hand carved with a forshortened and slightly edited version of an old saying by Sir Francis Bacon; "Old Wood to Burn Old Books to Read Old Friends to Trust" The original; “Age appears best in four things: old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read.” What a wonderfully warm and philosophical feeling this small room exhibits.
